Ladies Gents,
Another new features added to the site is the Tutorial System! I have this feature on my site and its one of the most used features there. This is pretty much one of the most beneficial features any car site could have, as it allows members to post up Tutorials and Articles pertaining to vehicles. I went through and added a bunch of Forced Induction Tutorials (same ones I have on my site) just to get things going with it. Any Tutorial added will automatically create a post in the DIY forum.

Okay, so you signed up, got into the site, and can’t figure out how to get around? Are you new to forums all together, or only been to a site with a basic index before?

Here’s some helpful hints to help you find your way around.

First, http://www.soulhamsters.com is just our “home page”. Some basic info, who we are, what we do, news from the site, and some links. If you click on Forum Portal at the top, that takes you to the start page for the forum.

On this page, it has some detailed info about what is going on in the forums, galleries, and garage. If you don’t like the color of the site, scroll to the BOTTOM LEFT of the page and click on the drop down box, and select from any of about 10 different themes for the site. We have a few general themes, and then one based on every color that your Soul is available in.

I honestly don’t use this page much, but usually click on “View New Content“ at the upper right to see what’s new since the last time you were here (or the last time you clicked it). This is the same as hitting New Posts on KSF.

If you want to go look at a particular subforum, click on FORUMS at the top of the page, and you’ll get a list of all of our subforums. This should be pretty similiar to the layout of KSF here.

We have a garage feature, and have had it since we started the site. Here you can post pictures of your modifications, (these DO upload to the site) and look at other folks work. After 5 posts you can use the Shoutbox at the top, which is a sort of Chat Room for everyone to talk to each other. Please keep in mind that the Shoutbox is just for general chatter, and that questions about your car, parts, and technical talk go IN THE FORUMS. If you post it in the Shoutbox, it’ll never be seen again, and others can’t learn from the discussion or add to it. I also occasionally give away free stuff (schwag) in the shoutbox to members for answering questions, or just being there.

Other than that, we do NOT host pictures on our site. The reason for this is because when you upload pictures on a Forum, like KSF does, when software upgrades come out all the pictures can be wiped out, locations changed, and links broken. Not to mention, if you upload pictures on a forum, you can’t use them elsewhere on other sites. Meaning that if you upload your photos on Photobucket, you can use them on any site, but if you upload pictures to a forum, you can only use them there on that forum. Lastly, if that forum closes, the community loses EVERYTHING. We have a couple of walkthroughs of how to upload your pictures on a free host like Imageshack.com or Photobucket.com , both of which are very easy to use. You upload your pictures once, organize them if you want, post them anywhere you want. KSF, SH, Facebook email, wherever you want.

Ladies Gentlemen,
We have an all new feature here on SH called Member Moods! Those of you who have been on my site for awhile know I have had this feature there for a long time and it was one of peoples most favorite features. So I have brought it here for you all to enjoy!

At the top of the forum where you log in and out, and check PM’s, you will see a drop down called Moods. You can change your mood to what ever your feeling and it will show up in your posts, under your avatar! Ladies Gentlemen,
I would like to welcome you all to the brand new Soul Hamsters forum! As you can see, there are ALOT of changes. I’ll start by announcing what I can…

1. Why was the forum upgraded? The old forum was just fine!
The new versions are always good to have due to security and patches that the old version didnt. Plus with this new version, its faster, easier to search for things, and theres alot of social networking tools built in. Theres also alot of Search Engine Optimization built in that will help the site get higher up in the engines. For one, you will notice that thread titles are included in the URL bar. This is a big thing to have when dealing with engines and spiders.

2. How do I get rid of the annoying right side panel?
There’s a small little arrow at the very top of the panel that allows you to slide the panel in and out. Closing it will make the forum go back to the full width of your screen.

3. What are status updates?
Status updates are like the same things you see on Facebook and other social networking sites!

4. What is the reputation system?
The reputation system allows you add to either positive or negative reputation to a person. You do so by clicking either the red or green icons next to the quote, reply, etc buttons on the bottom right side of each post.

If a user receives reputation, they can click on it and it will show who gave the rep. This is great especially for vendors who sell things and people want to give them rep depending on how good their service or products are. You can also give rep if someone answers your question in a good or bad way.

5. What happened to my car in the Garage?
The new Garage system acts very similiar to the old garage system, except there are a couple of new features, such as Featured Ride (to be added by an Admin) and some others. However, with the new forum software, the old Garage database could not be exported over, which in turn means everyone will have to re-add their vehicle and modifications.

6. Why do I get a Time Out Error or Database Error sometimes when viewing the forum?
With the new forum software, it takes up more resources even though it is quicker and the database is optimized better. Because of the additional resources needed to make the forum run, changes to the hosting plan need to be made. Additional memory will have to be added to the hosting plan so that the site can run better without the errors. The owner of the site is looking into this and we hope to have the issue resolved shortly. Because of the additional resources needed to make the forum run, there may be an increase in cost for a better hosting plan. This is where Donations will be greatly needed.

7. How do I see new content?
At the very bottom of the forum, you will see a link that says “Todays Active Content” You can either use that link or at the very top of the forum on the right side, you will see “View New Content” Either of these will help you find the new posts and threads.

8. How do I view the site on my cell phone?
The new forum software comes with an amazing forum skin that automatically detects when someone is on a cell phone. Just visit the forum on your phone and see everything for yourself!

9. How do I share a topic on Twitter, Facebook, and other social sites?
At the very bottom of every thread, you will see icons that allow you to share the thread on social sites, as well as either save, email, or print the thread as well.

10. What other things are there left to do on the forum?
While I am working quickly to get everything added from the old version, there are a few things that may take a few days to get sorted out. They are as followed:

- Arcade
- Skins (there will be ALOT of amazing new skins coming very soon)
- Facebook Fan Page Code for the right side panel
- Paypal Donation HTML for right panel
- Staff Tools, such as better moderation abilities
- Tutorials System
- Member Anniversaries at the bottom of the forum index
- Members online within the last 24 hours at the bottom of the forum index

We ask that you all please have patience over the next 1-2 weeks as we get the final things sorted out and get everything back to normal. We also ask that you all take some time and go through your profiles and adjust settings, update everything, and get a good feel of how things are laid out now.
