WELCOME ABOARD BUZZ!!

It is now time to get the Featured Ride rolling. So I would like to get things started and open up the entries for the October 2011 Soul Hamsters Featured Ride of the month. Now you may submit your car for the contest. When posting your submission please include the following.

* The year and trim package of the Soul.
* A list of modifications you have done to the car, if any.
* High Quality – 5MP minimum pictures of the front, back, Engine and interior of the Soul. Also please do not edit or photoshop your photos unless you wish to block out your plate.

Really simple stuff here. Don’t worry if you win there are more questions involved.

The October 2011 nominations will be open until September 28. After the finalists have been decided a poll will be posted for you the community to decide on our October 2011 Featured Ride.

***If we get more than 10 nominations only 10 will be chosen to go to public vote. If yours is not chosen for the vote, don’t worry there is always next month.***

Everyone PLEASE talk to your dealer

Customer service reps give out wrong information by mistake all the time. You have to prove some sort of damage as a result of that information, which doesn’t exist here (if the info they gave was in fact wrong).

Overall, I’m really not impressed with KIA dealerships. You’re probably going to have to call around to many of them to find one that’s worth a damn and will talk straight with you instead of hurrying to get off the phone so they can go have a smoke.

I know they’re not local, but they’re by far the best dealer around here:

You might call them and discuss it. At least if they had any info it might help in your effort to get local cooperation.

LUKEN!

Oh wow, I wasn’t really expecting anything to come of this when I entered. Listing all my mods made me realize how much I’ve actually done to the car. Getting in and out of it everyday you kinda forget. Well, thanks to SoulHamsters for one way or another, hooking me up with most of the parts I have on the car, and a special thanks to everyone that voted for me!

Alright guys! I’ll be taking submissions to get the calendar going this year. Now get out and get some mad tyte pictures!

Remember, most people vote for composition and picture quality, rather than just the car. Here are a few tips.

There are always exceptions, but these are general guidelines.

Pictures must be of high quality. Cropped to 8.5×11 at 300 dpi, or 1024×768 resolution minimum. If you’re unsure, just set your camera to the highest quality. Any pictures with insufficient resolution will not be accepted, and the member will be notified.

Please include your member name as well.

You’re welcome to change your submission at any time… just e-mail me a different picture and notify me of the change.

Send all submissions to: Rodville(at)gmail.com

The Cutoff date this year will be on Friday, November 19th at Midnight Eastern Standard Time. I’m in Fort Lauderdale so this takes away a maximum 5 hours extra to submit this to me.

Voting will commence on Monday, November 22 and will end on Tuesday November 30 at Midnight EST. Poll and voting will take place on Soulhamsters.com. I’ll provide a link when the time comes.

There will be NO deadline extensions. Once it hits Midnight on my side of the country it’s done. I must have a minimum of 12 (duh!) good pictures to make this work, so everybody get out there and shoot!

Here are some shooting and prep tips.

CAR WASH! It should come hand-in-hand with car photography but you would be surprised how many people have submitted photos of a dirty car, which takes MASSIVE points off, or would be completely unacceptable. Subaru’s are exempt. :P

WAX! Shininess is good. It’ll make us go “ooooh” and “ahhhh”. Waxing will add natural color saturation and clearness.

TIRES AND WHEELS!! I cannot express this enough. Tires and Wheels are the most important accessory your car has. Obviously, brake dust is a BIG no-no. Clean them wheels and scrub down any grime that might be on them. There are plenty of products out there that are specifically made to clean wheels of different types, whether they are chrome, polished, mag, etc. It’s good to use Tire Shine, but don’t use too much. You don’t want your tires to be as shiny as the car itself. They are rubber, after all, so you want a satin-type, not glossy, finish for your tires. It will make you tires look like good, clean, RUBBER tires in your image.

WINDOWS! It is a good idea to clean your windows again after a car wash and wax. Sometimes the water doesn’t dry up correctly after a car wash so you’ll get water spots on your glass, which is also a no-no and will take away from your image. The last thing you want is a nice, clean, spotless car and there are all kinds of spots on your windows. These spots are more easily seen if you have tinting. I personally use Stoner’s Invisible Glass cleaner. The stuff has worked great for me but there are many alternatives.

That’s all the advice that I can think of at the moment… remember, these tips apply for ALL kinds of automotive photo shoots and is textbook knowledge if you want to be presentable at a car show or something.

OH YES!! Make sure your front wheels are always facing the camera. You will see in many, if not all, professional automotive photos that the wheels will always face the camera whether the car is stationary or otherwise. Again, the wheels are your car’s best exterior accessory so it is important to show it.

If anyone else has some tips please share.

Remember, most people vote for composition and picture quality, rather than just the car. Here are a few tips.

-Location. Pick somewhere unique and exciting… your driveway doesn’t cut it.
-Light. Early or late in the day is best for natural light. Midday sun is flat and doesn’t provide much shadow or detail. Colors get washed out.
-Get rid of the junk. Crop out or use Photoshop to remove distractions. There are several members that can help with this. Just ask in the Off Topic section.
-Clouds are your friend. Clear skies may be great for going to the beach, but your pictures will be more interesting with clouds.
-Mergers. Watch out for two or more objects overlapping… such as a light pole coming out the hood of a car.
-Angles. Get high up or low to the ground. If you take a picture of a car from standing height, it’s probably going to look like any other snapshot.
-Get closer! You’re taking a picture of the car, not all the crap around it. Unless you’re trying to show the scale of the scenery, get close and show us the car!
-Color. This goes along with light; I saw a lot of washed out pictures. Vivid colors = excitement!
